Pfizer Inc. won a trademark case blocking drug makers in China from copying its Viagra erectile dysfunction pills’ blue diamond shape.
A Beijing court ordered the three companies to pay a $38,000 fine to Pfizer, stop producing the blue, diamond-shaped pills — which didn’t contain the active ingredient in Viagra — and print an apology in a Chinese legal newspaper, Pfizer said.
I find it interesting how the Western press gives this so much play when every lawyer in China knew Pfizer was going to win. Contrary to what most think, China’s trademark enforcement in the courts has actually become quite good, particularly in the more commercial cities.
Thanks for your comment.
I do not think that the “Western” press is giving attention to this story because of Chinese trademark law. The fact of the matter is that VIAGRA has become globally ubiquitous. Everyone knows the brand as much as they do Coca-Cola. I think that’s why it is receiving so much attention.
